Our Scanning Process
Before we start scanning your negatives, slides or Glass Plates we will inspect them for issues or damage that may impact the scanning quality. Once examined we will prep your negatives and slides ready for scanning using the desired scanner for the service you have chosen, we will remove any dust by using carbon fibre brushes and compressed air. When having your negatives, slides or glass plates we always wear cotton gloves to protect your film from grease and oil in human skin.
Once we have assessed your negative, slides or glass plates, we will set up the scanner, including colour calibration, to obtain the best from your images. We calibrate our Canon FS2710 and Epson v850 pro using IT8 calibration targets for both film and slides. Our Sony UY-S100 uses its own dedicated software for colour accuracy and is the only scanner we use that reads the DX code from your negatives to identify film type and speed to apply the correct colour profile.
For our other scanners, we can select the film type using Silverfast Ai studio which has 120 built-in colour profiles for most makes and types of negative and slide film. With Ai studio, we can also remove scratches and dust using inferred dust and scratch removal. Although we can use automatic colour correction we can also override the auto setting by doing manual colour corrections for all or selected parts of your image.
Scanners and what format of film we use them for.
We use the Canonscn FS2710 primarily for scanning APS (Advanced Photo System) negatives using a dedicated adaptor which allows us to extract the film from the spool for scanning the negative. The film gets scanned at a resolution of 1,766 x 3,212 pixels which is good enough to produce a 10″x6″ print.
The FS2710 doesn’t have inferred dust and scratch removal however using Silverfast Ai studio we can use SDRx dust and scratch removal which is an alternative to inferred. Although the FS2710 can also scan 35mm negatives and slides we don’t use it for these formats as the other two scanners can produce better results.
The Sony UY-S100 film scanner can scan both 35mm negatives and slides, for negatives it can scan full strips of negatives up to a 36 exposure in size. While the strip of negatives is being loaded the scanner will read the DX code from the negative and set the appropriate colour profile. The scanner will also read the frame numbers from the film and can use this data when saving the scans as Tiff files.
The scanner will scan and save files at a resolution of 3,072 × 2,048 pixels which is good enough to produce a 7″x10″ print, although not the highest resolution we can scan your 35mm negs and slides as its good enough for viewing digitally on a computer monitor or television screen.
With the Epson V850 pro we scan all film formats with the exception of APS, the formats that can be scanned up to 6400dpi which for 35mm film is 8819 x 6047 pixels which is high enough to produce a 20″x 30″ print. The V850 Pro uses infrared technology to remove dust and scratches from your negative and slide film which can help when scanning damaged film. Although unable to scan APS film we can scan 110 negatives, 126 negative and slides, 127 negatives, 120 negatives and slides, 35mm negatives and slides as well as Kodak Disc negatives.
To get the most out of your film we use Silverfast Ai studio scanning software which allows us to set film manufacturers as well as iso speed to improve colour accuracy during scanning. If required we can tweak the colour using global or selective colour correction. We also have the ability to do 48-bit scans with multi-exposure increasing the dynamic range of the scan.
